A Black Hat in the Shade
A man in a black hat threading beads in the shade, a smile that took its time, and an empty filling station under the stars.
In the shade of a boardwalk, a man in a black hat sat beside a table of handmade jewellery. Long braids, a string of beads around his neck, and the kind of stillness you only get from watching a great many days go by.

He didn't say much at first. He watched the street, the burros and the visitors, and answered questions with a nod. Then the camera came up, and something in him softened.

The smile arrived slowly and then all at once — the kind that changes a whole face. He had been working the same corner for years, he said, threading beads while the town came and went around him.

When we left he was already back at work, head down over the table, hands steady.

The afternoon light turned the colour of old brass. Pumps outside an antiques store, a hand-painted promise of cold drinks, the road curving back towards the hills.

We drove until the sky went black and the stars came out over an empty filling station covered in paint. One day on the old road — four stories, one road, and plenty of brothers we haven't met yet.
