Pann's, Since 1958
A yellow boomerang sign, a roof that tilts toward the sky and chicken and waffles at the counter — breakfast at Pann's Restaurant, the Googie coffee shop that has been feeding Los Angeles since 1958.
Pann's Restaurant opened in 1958, when a husband and wife opened a coffee shop on a busy corner in the southwest of Los Angeles. The building and its neon sign were designed by Armét & Davis, the firm behind many of the city’s Googie coffee shops — that space-age style of sharp angles, glass and optimism. More than sixty years later the same family still runs it, and the sign still rises over the palms like it is about to take off.

Green street signs, stickers and a palm trunk, and just past them the yellow sign that tells everyone driving by they have arrived. In the 1990s the second generation restored the whole place to how it looked on opening day, and it shows: nothing here pretends to be retro. It simply never stopped being 1958.

Inside, the light turns warm. Red walls, a neon script glowing above the counter, framed photographs and newspaper clippings of the people who have eaten and worked here over the decades.

Then the plate everyone comes for: fried chicken on a golden waffle, butter melting, syrup on the side. Breakfast and lunch only — when the afternoon ends, the kitchen closes and the grill gets a rest.

At the counter, the regulars. Some read, some talk, some just eat slowly and watch the room. A diner like this works like a clock, and the people sitting at it are part of the mechanism.

Behind the counter, a blue shirt with the Pann's logo, a white apron and a thumbs-up for the camera. The service is quick and warm, and nobody seems to be in a hurry.

Look up and the ceiling tells its own story: patterned lamps hanging from a dark, textured roof, every one of them glowing orange like a slow ember.

Red booths run the whole length of the glass wall, and the light from the street pours in across the tables. By mid-morning, nearly every seat was full.

Outside again, the details: the name carved into the concrete, birds of paradise in the garden beds, the address in big chrome numbers.

From the sidewalk the roof looks like a folded paper plane, its point aimed at the sky. Stone walls below, glass all around, and the sign standing guard on the corner.

“Since 1958,” the sign says, and it has earned every one of those years.

The marquee by the road still takes orders the old way: call ahead, and it will be ready when you are.

We left with full stomachs and a camera roll of yellow and red. On the grass by the parking lot, a red paper cup with the Pann's logo — the last trace of someone else’s good morning. Some places change with the city. This one has been a fixed point for more than sixty years, and it still feels like the start of something.
