Before the Lanes Open
A forty-lane bowling sign under a clear morning sky, a diner still marked CLOSED, and a bearded brother who looks right at home.
Some places are best seen before they open. The sign out front promises forty lanes, the palms stand perfectly still, and the parking lot is almost empty.

Through the glass: a hand-written CLOSED sign, rows of orange booths waiting for the breakfast crowd, lamps already glowing over the counter. The quiet before a diner wakes up has its own kind of beauty.

Then he walked in — grey beard, easy smile, the calm of someone at home here. We didn’t need to ask for a portrait. He leaned on the rail and gave us one.

Diners, bowling alleys, corner cafés — these are the places where strangers become regulars, and regulars become brothers.
